DESIGN JOURNEY

How do we create the magic play?
Strategy
Turn nighttime into a world of wonder through playful light-and-shadow pop-ups and stories, helping kids shift from fear or over-excitement to peace before sleep, creating safe environment and guiding imagination for kids.

Approach 1
Touch The Moon Theme Story
The moon becomes a gentle guide—through interactive play, children slowly turn fear of darkness into curiosity and calm.

Approach 2
Immersive Light Effects
Create moonlight like soft light effects to make kids feel safe and relaxed at the beginning of the story.

Approach 3
Interactive Pop-ups
Use pop-ups to make fun light effects. Help kids notice the beauty of the night instead of feeling afraid.
How do we balance cost and visual appeal?
Strategy
Select mechanisms that integrate with the story flow, create strong visual interest, and optimize manufacturability and material cost. We aim to design a 12-page pop-up book with a total production cost not exceeding $2 per book for 10,000 copies order.

Iteration 1
Swirl Mechanism
Pros:
Eye-catching pop-up
Colorful lights and shadows
Cons:
Forest shape is too abstract for kids
Forest Effect doesn’t match with story
Colorful Plastic sheets is costly

Iteration 2
Flip Mechanism

Iteration 3
V-Fold Mechanism
Pros:
V-fold Mechanism is more 3D to present light/shadow effects
V-fold Mechanism blends into the page scenes better and provides varies mechanisms and scenes on it.
Blowing to move tree parts adds fun and fits the moon-search scene
How do we make light source usage friendly?
Strategy
Design intuitive light interactions that align closely with the story experience and encourage exploration. Ensure the light source is safe, easy to hold and direct, and does not interrupt storytelling flow.

Approach 1
Playful prompts
Prompts like “Touch the moon” or “Blow the trees” are designed to match the storyline.
Approach 2
Icons hints
Icons hints help kids and parents understand where to shine the light on the page.
Approach 3
Accessible lights
Easily accessible light sources, like a smartphone flashlight reduces usage barriers for parents.
